Ankle sprain is one of the most common sports injuries.
Most ankle sprains occur on the lateral ligaments, specifically the anterior talofibular ligament. When severe, the calcanofibular ligament may also be involved.
Lateral ankle sprain occurs when the foot rolls in. Often times the injured person feels a pop at time of injury.
There is usually hemorrhage from torn ligaments and from damaged lower leg muscles and tendons. This causes "black and blue" bruising, tenderness and swelling.
Traditional treatment includes uses the "RICE" method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).
Surgery is usually unnecessary.
