Postural Assessment

Proper posture is necessary for optimal physical function and to also avoid discomfort. Correct posture allows one to:

  • Be naturally strong
  • Minimize stress on the bones, joints, muscles and tissues
  • Avoid injury and degeneration of bones

Improper posture can cause:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Excess pressure on the organs
  • Misalignment of the spine
  • Pain due to impingement on the nerves

Postural Assessment uses a Posture Grid to compare your posture to "neutral posture". In neutral posture, a line will fall straight through the ears, shoulders, knees and ankles.

Many people have poor posture. This includes:

  • Head and neck are forward
  • Shoulders and back hunched
  • One hip higher than the other
  • Knees and ankles pointing in or out
  • etc...

Once the posture is assessed, corrective exercises are recommended to:

  • Strengthen weak muscles
  • Relax tight muscles
  • Realign the joints
