Neck Pain

About 15% of adults experience neck pain. Prevalence of neck pain increases as one gets older and is more common in women than men. Neck pain can simultaneously involve the neck, shoulder girdle and upper extremity.

 

Neck pain may be felt locally in the back of the neck and/ or may radiate pain, numbness and tingling to the back of the head, the chest, the shoulder girdle, arm, forearm and hand.

 

Causes of neck pain include:

  • Acute and chronic neck strains and sprains
  • Herniated discs
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Neoplasms
  • Polymyalgia rheumatic
  • Compression fractures
  • Functional disorders
